Reminder: Baseball Offseason Workouts Will not Begin in September

Hello all,

Just a quick reminder as previously mentioned in our last post, the email sent out to the players lst week, and in our Zoom meeting, we will not be starting our workouts in the month of September.  We will revisit our situation on October 1 as a coaching staff.  When we make a decision we will inform all returning players and interested players in the coming days.  Best of luck to everyone as we prepare for the start of a new school year!

Materials Needed Prior to Starting any Offseason Workouts

Earlier this week coaches were informed that Patriot (under PWCS guidelines) is slowly and safely allowing sports to start some offseason workouts. In order to participate in any of these future workouts athletes will have to abide by a strict set of rules set by the county and that we will administer at Patriot. Although our program will not be starting anything until further notice, all potential players must have these things prior to us starting.

Please see important information below:

  • Every potential participant must have a physical dated after May 1, 2020.
  • Every potential participant must have their blue card filled out (emailed to every returning player on their PWCS Outlook email) Interested participants should email Coach Grove (grovens@pwcs.edu) to have an emergency card emailed to them ASAP.
  • Every potential participant must have their county concussion training completed. This can be completed online at: https://www.pwcs.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=340225&pageId=801110 (copy and paste in browser).

Parents that are viewing this email, please make sure that your son has checked his PWCS Outlook email.  Within that email there will be a Powerpoint presentation that you can view with important information.  You will also find an electronic emergency card as an attachment.

On September 3 any interested participants can submit their physical form (dated after May 1, 2020), their completed concussion training sheet, and their blue card at Patriot during one of the two designated drop off times (10:00 am-11:30 am, or 7:00 pm-8:30 pm).

Due to 2021 baseball season starting two months later than normal this year, the baseball team will not have any workouts during the month of September. The coaching staff will revisit and decide our plan going forward in early October, after our interested student athletes have become acclimated to school in a virtual setting.

Regardless of our start date, please work to complete all necessary steps and submit necessary information Thursday September 3, 2020. This will allow us to start promptly when the coaching staff decides that we are going to move forward preparing for our 2021 season.  Potential student athletes will not be able to participate until all of the requested paperwork is provided.

Uniform Drop Date Decided

Pioneer baseball family, please read the important information provided.  PWCS is allowing a drive thru type of uniform drop off next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Do not skip over any material below, directions are exactly how things have to be done via PWCS guidelines, and from the baseball staff to make things more efficient.  If you have questions contact me immediately!

Provided information (this was emailed to all players on the team via their PWCS email accounts)

Patriot Pioneers Athletics Uniform & Equipment Collection May 19th and 20th (rain or shine) -

Student-athletes with school-owned athletic uniforms, equipment, and other sports related items should return items to Patriot HS on Tuesday May 19th and Wednesday May 20th from 9:00am-11:00am rain or shine. The uniform return will be contact-less and will be made curbside from a vehicle.

  • All pickup materials for athletic and activities will take place outside of the buildings and students will not exit their vehicle
  • Students must wash and dry all items that are being returned to school
  • Items must be loose and not in bags upon return
  • Students and are responsible to wear their own PPE (gloves and masks)
  • Coaches will be setup in the parking lot for the collection of materials - staff will direct vehicles once on campus
  • Athletic materials (non-clothing) would be placed in bins by the student. Coaches will check off their return.
  • Students who left items in their locker will notify their coach and the items will be placed in the trunk or rear of their car.   Students will also receive their certificates and letters at this time

Tuesday is the preferred date; the coaching staff would like to have everything done by Tuesday, so a second day does not have to be committed to.  As mentioned above the turn in is taking place rain or shine!  Players do not have to be with their parents, or vice versa.  We will check players off as you come through on our list.

All players will also have to drop their fundraising raffle tickets sold into a box during the assigned drop off time. Important information to follow when dropping money off in envelopes for raffle tickets or a remaining balance:

  1. All money should be submitted as a check, or multiple checks.  THERE SHOULD BE NO CASH SUBMITTED! This allows the money to be added very quickly and efficiently. If a player has cash, parents should take that amount of cash and exchange it for a check that they write in that exact same amount. All checks for raffle tickets should be made out to the Patriot Athletic Boosters. All checks and material should be in an envelope with the player’s first and last name written legibly on the envelope.  The envelope should also include all of the sold ticket stubs that will be entered into the giant box at the end for the drawing of winners.

  1. If a player owes a balance to PHS Baseball after raffle tickets and money are submitted they can write a check to Patriot Baseball for the remainder of what they owe toward their 2020 spirit pack. This check should be in a separate envelope labeled with their first and last name, and the words “remaining balance”. They already have their cleats and turfs and will be getting their hooded sweat shirt, hooded short sleeve pullover, fleece pullover, sweatpants, and their under shirt. Varsity and swing players had their spirit pack total amount dropped to the same cost as JV players 300.00 as the Under Armour baseball pants were sent back to the manufacturer due to not having a season.

  1. Raffle tickets were used to offset spirit pack costs.  Players that sold all raffle tickets have no balance. If a player did not sell all of their raffle tickets, but they one or more banner signs that amount was used to cover costs when the Georgia spring trip was canceled.

  1. For balance information contact me via email or text by 7:00 pm on Monday.  This will give me time to respond so you can be prepared for Tuesday morning.

  1. While you are dropping material off in the bins (uniforms and raffle materials, a coach will be dropping a bag containing your spirit pack into the trunk area of your car.

      6. Players who do not pay their balance for their spirit pack will not receive the spirit pack   until the balance is paid (most likely next school year).

Team 2020 Update: Important Information

Hello all.

I hope this correspondence finds that each and every one of you is safe with your immediate family and that all of your loved ones are OK.  This is an extremely crazy time for all of us right now.  Today, we had a meeting with Mr. Qualls (Athletics Director) in regards to spring sports, and our seasons ending abruptly.  In our meeting he gave us guidance on issues related to the following: the lettering process, a senior slide show he is creating, the handling of outstanding fundraising money, the handling of money owed for spirit pack items/other items related to equipment and uniforms, and also the collection of team uniforms and all equipment. This information also contains information about workouts etc… This information may get a little long, but I need you to read it so you know what is going on as of now, and also understand all of this could change quickly based on decisions made by state or federal government.  Each talking point is listed below with a description:

  1. Lettering: Any player that was on the Georgia trip roster will be lettering this season.  If players were only on Junior Varsity, they will not letter, but full time varsity and swing players are letting this season.  PWCS has decided that we are going forward with letters and that all varsity players would receive them, along with other players that would have had the opportunity (this is why swing players are included)

  1. Seniors Slides Presentation: Seniors, I will be texting you all directly to inform you of an email that will be coming to you from me.  This email will be a template developed by Mr. Qualls for all senior athletes and will be part of a slide show PHS is creating.  It is your job as a senior, to complete the slide and provide all needed information etc… you then have to email it back to me, and I will send them to Mr. Qualls.  These are due to me by April 10th.  It is essential that you meet the deadline!

  1. Outstanding Fund Raising:  We currently have thousands of dollars worth of raffle tickets that are in each player’s possession.  Each player was sent home with 40 tickets when they were selected for the team and prior to the shut down.  This means each player has 200.00 worth of raffle tickets they were responsible to sell.  This amount raised (200.00) offsets spirit pack costs, and is added to the total amount sold the first time we did raffle tickets ($150.00 is all were sold). All money, ticket stubs, and unsold tickets must be returned to me when deemed allowed by PHS/PWCS.  I sent home a piece of paper with your son that showed how they did the first time on raffle tickets.  I will be texting your son so they can provide me with a screen shot of the paper, since I cannot get into school to access my spreadsheet.  In that text they need to tell me the number of tickets they sold this time out of 40, and I will tell them what/if they still owe anything for their spirit packs. Please do not reach out to me in a panic, I will send you the amount you still owe if any.  Please keep in mind, this money goes to the program, but I cannot add it to the baseball account until we are allowed back in schools or until coaches receive further guidance on submitting funds to the booster club.  The same day I collect and count the money is the day the winners will be drawn.   The money drop off date for raffle tickets is currently TBA due to social distancing practices being mandated by Governor Northam.

  1. Players who did not Raise Enough for Spirit Pack: Any amount that is short of the needed amount will be due to Coach Grove in the form of a check or cash.  This will be collected the same day as the tickets. Checks for the remaining amount should be separate from raffle ticket checks.  All raffle ticket checks should be made out to Patriot Athletic Booster Club, all personal checks to cover outstanding costs should be made out to Patriot Baseball.  Please specify in the memo area what the check is for (I.E. Spirit Pack, Raffle Tickets, etc…)

  1. Receiving spirit packs: All players who have fundraised and or paid the remaining balance will receive their team spirit pack on raffle ticket/uniform and equipment drop off day (whenever that is).  The spirit pack price is being adjusted for varsity, and will only require players raise/pay $300.00 as the grey baseball pants order was cancelled.

  1. Team Uniforms/Equipment: All players MUST return any uniform material that belongs to PHS.  This includes practice jerseys (scrimmages) jerseys, pants, and pants that a player may have accidentally held on to in previous seasons.  Failure to return items will result in an obligation being placed against you.  Catchers that have the three sets of team gear, you must bring that with you on uniform/equipment drop off day.  This gear should not be worn for personal reasons and belongs to Patriot High School.  Failure to return, or gear that has been over used (more than two scrimmages) will result in an obligation.

  1. Team Workouts: The next time we can workout together sounds like it will be the fall as of now.  We had plans to run a summer camp this year, but obviously that is off the table. Players are allowed to work out on their own, but should not be using PHS or any PWCS facilities. When the stay at home is lifted (maybe as early as this summer) there will be days I go and mow/work on the field.  On those days, I will send out a text message prior and let the players know that they can come hit/throw as needed.  This should only be done when it is legally allowed, and if there is a coach present.  Players should not ever work out at the field without coaches or PHS personnel present.  I am transferring to Patriot to teach, so I will be in the building next year which will enhance communication between the players and myself, that said, I also plan on starting fall ball within the first couple of weeks back into the school year and will provide a schedule at a later time when things are figured out.

  1. Double Check: Please check with your sons as I will be texting and emailing them by the end of the week. Emails will come to the their Patriot High School email account, and will allow me to keep better documentation for my records in my PWCS email account.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  Right now, the most important thing again is to make sure all of you are safe, and that you are taking care of yourselves.  This is a very unique and strange time for every one and I am not sure if we will see something like this again in our lifetime.  For our sake, I sure hope we don’t because this has been stressful and hard on so many great people, and no one wants to ever see someone struggle.  With that said, it is my job to provide this information to you as discussed in our meeting today.  Our information is a little long winded because we were right in the middle of a fundraiser, and right at the start of our season where items were still being shipped and paid for.  I do not expect anything to change with our current situation for the foreseeable future, but if something does I will reach out immediately.  I just want to get this published in writing well in advance so we are organized and finished in a timely manner, whenever we are allowed to do anything.  Please let me know if you have any questions, but please hold all questions until I send an email with the amount owed to your son.  I cannot answer any questions until they respond to me with a picture message of what is still owed for spirit pack.  Thanks and stay safe!

Baseball Season First Contest Date Moved to March 30th

VHSL announces spring sports first play date delayed two weeks;

academic activities championships change due to coronavirus

Charlottesville, Va. – Due to the rapidly changing landscape regarding COVID-19 and in an effort to support VHSL member schools and school divisions the VHSL Crisis Management Committee met and decided the spring sports season be delayed for two weeks with the first play date now scheduled for March 30 announced VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. The original spring sports first play date was scheduled for Monday, March 16. The Outdoor Track championships, Tennis Championships, and the VHSL Spring Jubilee are not affected by this delay and all championships are still scheduled on their original dates.  The Crisis Management Committee will meet again Wednesday, March 25 to re-evaluate current conditions.

Please understand that this does not change the current status of no practice etc... All practices and team meetings are suspended until further notice. March 30th is also the date that the VHSL set, PWCS could alter this date if they choose to do so, and move it back further than the VHSL's current date. Players can still work out on their own, but are not allowed to use the facilities at Patriot High School.  As more information becomes available you will be notified.

Georgia Spring Trip Canceled, Baseball Season Currently Suspended

Attention all players and families, the 2020 Patriot Baseball spring break trip to Georgia has been canceled due to PWCS guidance that was presented today.  With that said, we will do our best to fill the schedule with local games. As of today, your son is only responsible for raising enough money for his spirit pack. Any funds raised above that number will go into the baseball account and will be used to benefit the 2020 team and future seasons. Extra money raised will be used to purchase some additional spirit pack items for this year that have not been ordered yet, it will also be used for some team outings (I.E. a team dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings, a group laser tag etc…), lastly, some of the funds will be used toward the 2020 team banquet. At this time, we ask that if you are still working on selling banners to local businesses and stakeholders that you feel free to continue that endeavor.  All sales will end on April 1.  We also want to remind you that raffle tickets are due the next time the team meets. This fundraiser will have to be finished because several tickets were already sold.  We will proceed with the drawing whenever we play our first home contest. I will update the players with any more information at practice, and post necessary/needed correspondence online as it becomes available. There will be no further practice or games until further notice from PWCS.

Major Points:

  • The 2020 Georgia trip is canceled per PWCS guidance. We are looking into trying to fill our schedule with local games to the best of our ability.

  • Look at the letter that was sent home with your son the other night; if your son was on the Georgia roster, deduct the Georgia cost from what is owed. Raffle tickets sales will be used to offset the spirit pack cost (as originally planned).  If extra banner income was generated, that will be used to offset any remaining individual costs, prior to it helping the team/program as a whole.

  • JV players your only cost remains that spirit pack, if you sold banners above this cost and did not sell enough raffle tickets, that amount will be used to alleviate/pay off your costs. For funds raised over the amount see the information above.

  • Finish selling raffle tickets, and finish any banner sales you have already started, and know that the extra money will be put into a few team outings (more than likely dinners after practice a couple nights) where we can continue to develop team unity.

  • Next Saturday night’s Kidz Night Out (3/21/2020) is canceled, and will not be made up.  The next Kidz Night Out event will be in September or October of 2020.

  • All practices are canceled and games are postponed until further notice from PWCS.

Patriot Baseball Twitter Account is Active

Patriot baseball family, the Patriot HS baseball twitter account has been activated.  After discussion, we will be using the account @PatriotHitSquad.  This account has a large number of people including collegiate coaches already following this account, and allows for the players to get the exposure they deserve.  Please tune in to the account as we have some big ideas coming in the 2020 season. We are working to take our Social Media presence to the top of the mountain this season, and run one of the top accounts in Virginia, if our plan comes to fruition.  Please follow all season long and be sure to view our team website as well as here on big teams and over on our league lineup account.

PHS Baseball Community Service Project: Canned Food Drive

The holiday season is a time where families and friends come together and spend quality time with one another. However, in some parts of our country and specifically in our local area the holidays can be a stressful time for people who may not have the financial means to provide in a comfortable manner for their families. To help these families, the Patriot Baseball team will be having a canned food drive as our community service project for the 2019-2020 school year.  Players and their families can donate these items to Mr. Qualls (Athletics Director) in school, or they can bring the items to weight lifting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will collect canned goods and non-perishables until December 20, 2019, which is the last day before the students go on winter break.

Listed below are ideas od items that can be donated to those in need. However, other items that are not on this list are also welcome and would be greatly appreciated.

  • Applesauce

  • Canned Beans
  • Canned Chicken

  • Canned Fish (Tuna and Salmon)

  • Canned Meat (SPAM and Ham)

  • Canned Vegetables

  • Cooking Oils (Olive and Canola)

  • Crackers

  • Dried Herbs and Spices

  • Fruit (Canned or Dried)

  • Granola Bars

  • Instant Mashed Potatoes

  • Meals in a Box

  • Nuts

  • Pasta

  • Peanut Butter

  • Rice

  • Shelf-stable and Powdered Milk

  • Soup, Stew and Chili

  • Whole Grain Cereal

We are hopeful that the baseball program can make an impact in our community and give back to those in need. Community service is extremely beneficial to everyone involved in the endeavor, and can be something that really allows things to be put into perspective at the end of the day.

Thank you for your attention and support in our community service project!
