Please look under Team Files for "2018 Meet Result Sheet." It has been updated with meet results and current team standings. Look under the "Team Standing (updated)" Tab at the bottom for the list. Its from the Glory Days meet. There is also your 5k conversion since the Glory Days meet was short (2.9 miles). You will also see your average pace with that time. We are still figuring out who we will be taking post season. Top 7 run in post season meets and we are either deciding 1-3 athletes for alternates so up to 10 total.

FYI. Glory Days Invite is still on

I know many athletes and parents keep wondering why the District Meets have been canceled. Here are the following reasons.

After the past 4 months of heavy rainfall the lower part of the course has been soaked with the water with no where to drain.  There is too much damage in the lower are as a result of all the water and ruts from trucks/ tractors that have gone through there over the last 3-4 months. The cut through is too dangerous according to other coaches and AD's. This area of the course is at a point of being a hazard especially when athletes would have to traverse through this area 3 times during a race. The park is going to address this during the winter and look for some alternatives for the future years, whether to build up the path or cut through a more slightly elevated area.

We received notice from the meet director for Glory Days the course is being redesigned so the lower area will only be traversed once during the race. This way the course is preserved and so it won't be confusing for athletes and allowing them the opportunity to race. With the redesign the course will be short and will only be around 3 miles not 3.1 miles. The park is putting down some wood chips and straw to firm up some of the problematic areas still present. The good news is as of now the Glory Days meet is still on.

*See photo above of lower area of course. The path is covered with water and athletes would be sinking into the mud.

2 more chances :)

Team, Coach Connor has extended the opportunity for you all to try and make one of the relay teams for RVA relays. There are 3 teams. Relay A, Relay B, and Relay C. Five athletes per relay with Relay A being the fastest.

You have tomorrow’s Saturday Long Run and Mondays workout to prove to yourself and to Coach Connor  you have what it takes to be on one of the relays.

And don’t worry, if you are unable to make a relay team you will still be guaranteed a spot to run in the “Extras” race! Everyone gets to go!

But aim high and don’t settle. We coaches believe in you! See you tomorrow at 7:30am at Manassas Battlefield Henry Hill Visitors Center parking lot!

Monroe Parker Meet Results & Info. regarding meet selection

Monroe Parker Meet Results

Varsity Boys & Girls Team placed 4th Overall.

Medalist: Ryan Hamacher- 8th Place- Varsity Boys, Emily Graves- 11th Place- Varsity Girls, Joey Schwab- 2nd Place- JV Boys, Bradley Freedman- 4th Place- JV Boys, Sebastain Hersey- 7th Place- JV Boys, Kate Sullivan- 5th Place- JV Girls, Madeliene Burneskis- 11th Place- JV Girls, Landey Green- 13th Place- Freshman, Ariana Grant-15th Place- Freshman

Course PR: Ryan Hamacher, Trey Massey, Vaughn Morris, Sebastatin Hersey, Hailey Yentz, Taylor Seay, Madeliene Burneskis

Hit Varsity Standard: (Since this course is 3 miles you have to add roughly 45 seconds for boys and 1 min for girls to get a 3.1 mile time) Grace Pippin, Lizzie Burrell, Corynne Dunaway, Dori Hochard, Colin Doran, Zach Salter, Vaughn Morris, Daniel Skibinski,

AND congrats to Theo Skelton for racing the entire JV Boys race with NO SHOES! What a tough athlete!

Congrats to everyone this weekend! You all proved hard work is paying off. Remember to work as a team out there on the racecourse. Top 5 score and it could be you that's one of our top 5! The boys and girls Varsity definitely have a chance to make it to States as a Team!

Now is speaking of meets us coaches wanted to give all athletes and parents a brief explanation on how we decide meet selection.

1.We choose fastest to slowest regardless of grade or past years racing experience. We decide on wants current. We filter athletes into races we see fit.

2. Not every meet is created equal. Race directors create which races they want not the coaches. There are not always the same races offered each meet. For example: One meet might have a JV Boys but not a JV Girls. Any athlete and parent can reference milestat.com calendar for proof of what races are offered.

3. Entry number into races is not created equal. Again it is up to race directors to create the number of athletes per race not the coaches. We may not always be able to take everyone. For example: One meet may allow 7 athletes to race Varsity and another meet may allow 10 athletes to race Varsity.

4. We have been creating and giving opportunities to everyone on the team even though everyone has not met our Varsity Standard. Every athlete and parent has signed our rules and expectations and it states the following:

You must hit the qualifying standardto make the Varsity team.

    1. Boys: 20:00 5k (3.1 miles) (6:27 average mile)
    2. Girls: 22:00 5k (3.1 miles) (7:05 average mile)
      1. Athletes who hit the above qualifying standard are approved to compete in both district meets and invitationals.
    3. Emerging Elite will only be competing at district meets until the above Varsity qualifying standard time is met.
    4. Opportunities to compete in invitationals will be approved once the above Varsity qualifying standard is met.

We do not have to take everyone. We believe everything should be earned in some way shape or form. That’s why Head Coach Connor has been emailing all athletes and parents the Magical Monday questions so everyone can earn a spot to run in invitationals. We have been graciously giving many opportunities and remember last year we did not do this. The developmental team now called Emerging Elite, last year only raced district meets until they hit our standard.

We have posted all meet results in Team Files so all athletes and parents can see what the current standings are. When you click on the tabs you will see the overall rankings for the team from fastest to slowest.  So for Oatlands this weekend we will be looking at the overall results from Monroe Parker. The standings are always changing. Depending on the race we will take top 7-10 athletes for Varsity and then filter the rest of the athletes in the proper races. After every race we will update the new team standings.

If you have any questions regarding meet selections please email Head Coach Connor.

The t-shirt will cost $10 and you can give cash to Coach Asia. Please let her know ASAP or by Wednesday August 29th so she can order the shirts and you can receive in time for this weekends meet.

Patriot Cards are due to Coach Asia this Friday August 31. Please bring your money to her ASAP. We are still plenty short of our goal to sell at least 300 cards. We would love to sell them all. If we could also have some parent volunteers to donate water, Ice, various food items , small table, tarps, trash bags, bandages, toilet paper;) for each meet this would be tremendously beneficial to the team and greatly appreciated from our athletes. A lot of what is done for our sport comes from our parent volunteers. We couldn't do it without all you parents. Notes: Please get 8 hours of sleep the night before your race!

Please make sure to eat Breakfast (Cereal with Milk, Chocolate Milk, Avocado Toast, Cottage Cheese, Chia Pudding, Yogurt with Fruit, String Cheese, Oatmeal, English Muffin with jam, Apple, Banana) Consume a 200- to 300-calorie meal one to two hours before the race. The majority of the calories should come from whole, unprocessed carbs. Keep the meal low in fiber and fat; both take a long time to digest. Aim for less than 10 grams of fiber per serving (or less if you have a sensitive stomach); limit fat to five to 10 grams. It’s also a good idea to stay away from the spicy stuff, which could upset your stomach.

Start hydrating 24 hours before your race. Aim to consume 17 to 20 ounces of fluids two to three hours before the race, and another seven to 10 ounces 20 minutes before the race begins.

Please make sure you bring plenty of Water/ Skratch/ UCAN and food/snacks (Banana, Dried Apricots, Dried Plums, Oranges, Applesauce, Carrots, Granola Bars, Energy Bars, Pretzels, Popcorn, Rice Cakes with Peanut Butter, Gummy Bears, Hummus with Wheat Crackers, Beef Jerky, Poptarts, Tuna, Edamame) for before and after the race.

But most importantly Don't Do Anything New. Whatever you consume, make it something that’s worked for you during your regular training runs. It should be something that makes you feel energized but doesn’t leave you with an upset stomach.

5K Clothes Prep-Lay out your clothes the night before, and everything you’ll need for race day (Uniform, Socks, Sportsbra, Shoes/Spikes, Watch, Hair ties, Extra set of clothes, underwear,& dry shoes, trash bag for dirty clothes) Dress appropriately for the weather (rain jacket, poncho, layers if its cold). It helps to put everything you plan to wear to the race on the night before as a dress rehearsal, and then lay it out in a visible place for the morning.

"Race Day isn't the Challenging part, It's the Reward for the months of Hard Work while you were training."

Here is the link for Spiritwear.

https://stores.athletesmark.com/patriot_XC

Every athlete is required to purchase a team t-shirt. You can choose between a 50/50 blend or performance t-shirt.

The deadline for Spirtwear is August 8th, 2018. The link will close on this day. All orders will be delivered at practice 14 days after deadline.

Also Team Pictures are scheduled for August 16th, 2018 at Patriot High School Stadium

All athletes must be ready in their uniform by 9:25am. Our designated photo time is 9:30-9:40am

Our uniform is the same as last years cross-country and track season.  If you ran last year in cross-country or track you do not need a new uniform. Any Freshman or First Time Athlete running cross-country this year your uniform order was submitted today. We ordered the size you entered when you signed up for cross-country. We don't know when we will receive the uniform from the printers. Usually the turn around time is 2 weeks. If we don't get the uniform before pictures or our first meet we are currently working on finding cross- country/track alumni to lend theirs to a new athlete.

Also our Parent Meeting is scheduled for August 7th 2018 at 7pm in the Patriot High School Auditorium. We recommend all parents come to this meeting. We will be sharing very important information such as Rules & Expectations, Racing Criteria, Lettering Criteria,Practices, Attendance, and answer any questions you have for the coaches.

Our fundraiser for this season is the Patriot Pioneer Cards. Coach Asia will be handing out information to the athletes at practice on August 3rd. This year the card is going digital. There will be an app with all the vendor discounts.  Students will be handing out activation cards with passwords so the purchaser can use the app. The due date for the cards is the end of the month August 30th. Each athlete's goal is to sell 5-10 cards each. Please turn in your money each Friday to Coach Asia. Our goal is to raise $3,000 dollars or more to go into the cross-country account. We are hoping to purchase a tent or two for the team because as of right now we have no tent. Another one of our goals is to be the Fall Sport with the biggest Sales! Go Patriot Cross- Country!

Note from the Coaches

Athletes and Parents we as coaches are sincerely sorry for all the schedule and attendance changes.

The changes were due to various reasons such as trying to accommodate athletes who were going on family trips, vacations, or had school activates all while trying to stay within the rules of VHSL and recommendations from our Athletic Director.

Since the recent news regarding mandatory practice we will be excusing any athlete until the first day of school August 27th, 2018. But this doesn’t mean we are going to be extremely lenient. We will only be excusing family vacations, family trips, or school related activities, as we understand these have been planned in advance. We will not excuse for tardiness or missing practice other than the reasons stated above. You need to notify Coach Asia by Monday August 6th, 2018 if you are going to miss practice for the reasons excused above.

We are still upholding the 20-day practice rule before the first meet. No matter what an athlete has to have 20 days of practice, which is 1 practice per day minus Sunday. If an athlete does not have this they will not be competing until they have reached the 20 practices.

With all that being said, we want to assist any way possible to help these young athletes get in their 20 practices.  Please reach out to Coach Connor at Ian.Connor@TheRunningStoreTeam.comif you are in a tight position to get them in before the first meet on August 25th.

Any athlete who gets their 20-day practice will get to race at Great Meadow Invitational. We will be giving this one time opportunity to anyone who made the team in Varsity, Emerging Elite, Freshman Team. We will be taking the top 10 times from tryouts for each race. There will be a Boys and Girls- Varsity A, Varsity B, Upperclassman, and Lowerclassman Race. At this invitational athletes can have another opportunity to hit the Varsity standard and get the chance to race in future invitationals. This is the only invitational we are allowing everyone to run in without hitting the standard. To qualify for future invitationals a standard for Varsity will have to be met.

Starting Monday August 6thand every Monday throughout the season, those Emerging Elite athletes will have a chance to hit the Varsity standard. This will be called “ Magical Mondays!” Athletes interested in qualifying must email Coach Asia that they are interested in attempting to make a magical moment!  This will be held at the end of practice so teammates can cheer on the attempts. Boys will need to run a 2-mile time trial in 12:14. Girls will need to run a 2-mile time trial in 13:28. This will be the last 2 miles of the 5k course you just completed at tryouts. Athletes attempting will not have to do the Monday workout, as they will be focusing on their qualifying attempt.

It’s going to be a great season and we are here to have fun and make everyone into Superstars! Go Patriot!

August Schedule & Mandatory Practices

See Team Files for August XC Training. There are 2 files, Level 1 & Level 2.

In one of our past announcements it was stated mandatory practices start August 27th but after clarification with our athletic director we were incorrect.

So mandatory practices actually started the 1st day of tryouts, July 30th. Since July 30th attendance as been taken. Please see Team Rules & Expectations for our attendance policy.

If you did not inform Coach Asia of a future absence before tryouts then the absences will be counted against you starting tomorrow August 1st. If you did speak with Coach Asia before tryouts you will be excused and not be penalized because of our miscommunication.

And a reminder per VHSL rule the 20 days of practice before the first meet went into affect on July 30th. This rule does not count double practices or 2 practices in one day. It only counts for 1 practice per day. Again each student athlete must have 20 days of practice before the first meet.

Also a reminder to all parents if your child is going to try out for cross-country in the future NEVER schedule anything in August. Tryouts always start the last couple days of July/first day of August. Practices count as mandatory first day of tryouts.

If you have any questions please email Coach Asia.

*** There is still a workout at Marstellar Middle School tomorrow August 1st, 2018 at 7pm. Coach Connor forgot to add to training calendar
