Hope everyone is having a great and well-deserved break.  A reminder, for those not already in club wrestling on Mondays and Wednesdays, our first off-season workout will be on Wednesday, April 3, starting at 6:00 in the weight room, moving over to the Aux for open mat at 7:00. 

We will start up our off-season program on April 3.  Sessions will run through June 12, with the exception of April 10 and May 27.  

Will start in the weight room at 6:00 PM, open mat workouts will start at 7:00 PM in the aux gym and wrap by 8:00 PM. 

For those of you that are wrestling with the VA Patriots, go to those workouts.  Either you or your parents have paid for those sessions and you should get good value for your money.  Drop in on other Mondays or Wednesdays if they aren't working out.

I will post up others that I get from local coaches and clubs.  For instance, Legend Wrestling in Vienna hosted local camps run by technicians/wrestlers from Virginia Tech for one week and NC State for another.  

Just like any off-season workouts, camps, clubs and off-season lifting and wrestling at PHS are not mandatory, but have been a proven formula for the growth and development of our wrestlers.  

And then there were 4…what a weekend at the regionals.  First off, hats off to Brooke Point for hosting a great tournament.  For those who were there, you can tell that this expanded region (19 teams) has made it highly competitive to move on to States.  We had four of our teammates qualify as alternates, who will head down to Va Beach on Thursday and will be entered in to the tournament if any of the top 4 qualifiers in their weight class has to scratch due to illness, injury, etc. 

Plan for the week:

Monday- no practice, get a run or lift in

Tuesday and Wednesday- weight management practices, 6-7:30

Thursday- early release (details TBP) and travel to VA Beach, at the coaches’ meeting that night (7:00PM), we will know if there are any scratches. 

Friday and Saturday- State Tournament at VA Beach Sportsplex

Any varsity/JV wrestlers in the 106-165 weight ranges are asked to come in on Tuesday and Wednesday to help our alternates maintain weight and stay sharp to be ready if called on to represent Region 6B. 

The Regional tournament will be held at Brooke Point HS (1700 Courthouse Road, Stafford, VA) on Saturday, Feb 10.  Timeline follows:

  As we enter the post-season for our varsity wrestlers, not too soon to start thinking about your off-season training.  Here are some of the local clubs:

After we get through post season and the awards banquet in March, will let you know what our own lifting/open mat schedule will be and will try to offset with the local clubs to make sure that our workouts don't step on theirs.  It is always good to wrestle different opponents and meet/work with different coaches with their styles and techniques.  The road to championships runs through the off-season. 

On camps, I will push out what I receive from the local clubs and from colleges.  Looking at a team return to George Mason this summer, will let you know when they publish dates.  

Regular season wrapped up with a 4th place finish at the Stafford Duals.  Impressive effort by the team and we are on a great glidepath to finish strong in the district tournament.  As I said in last week's message, the weather made this week a bit of a meat grinder with all of the re-scheduled competitions and the team came out stronger for it.  

Districts are the first milestone on the path to VA Beach, Gainesville HS will host this year's tournament and here is the tentative schedule: 

8:30- Weigh In (scratch +2 growth pounds) 

10:00- Round 1: Quaterfinals 

11:15- Round 2: Championship Semis and Consolation Quarters

1: 15- Round 3: Consolation Semis

2:45- Round 4: Consolation Finals (placement for 3d-5th)

4:30- Round 5: Finals

Top 4 in each bracket advance to Regionals next Saturday.  All times are approximate, rounds could go faster and will continue to roll as the pace of wrestling dictates. 

I will double check the trans matrix later and get the bus depart time posted up soon. 

For any JV wrestlers who did not compete at the Gainesville JV Jam, bring your singlet in to any of the practices this week so I can check you off (and not have to charge you for it), or turn it in to Mr. Qualls' office (bag it with your name).  

You can keep your lock, but clean everything out of your locker before the end of the week if you are moving on to a Spring sport.

1. JV's last event of the season is the JV Jam on Thursday.  We will collect uniforms following the meet, if you can't attend, please arrange to turn in your singlet early.  JV athletes are encouraged to continue practicing through the State tournament to help our varsity prepare for districts and regionals. 

2. Need max attendance at Tuesday's practice.  We will vote on team captains for the 24-25 season and they will be announced at the team's awards dinner in March (date TBP). 

3. For varsity, looking to squeeze in a practice Thursday before the JV Jam.  We will discuss this at Monday's practice. 

4. The mulch order form has gone out.  Expect more on orders and delivery (team fundraising opportunity) in the near future.  

5. Looking to attend the Virginia Duals next season, will need a big fundraising effort to cover the cost of transportation and lodging (1x overnight in Hampton, VA).  Details to follow.

A weekend of some great wrestling from your Pioneer Grapplers.  First, thanks to those who stepped up to fill varsity roster spots on short notice (Owen Armstrong, Mya Daroczy, Ethan Pitts-Dilley) and brought us home a bunch of team points to ensure we won our duals in pool wrestling to advance to the championship round. 

Everyone brought home team points this Saturday and ensured that we met up with our hosts, Osbourn HS, in the finals.  Hats off to Osbourn HS for hosting a great tournament and for closing it out with a win against us head to head.  

Thanks to our parents for great support, we could hear your encouragement from the stands.  We couldn't do it without you and you should be very proud of your student/athletes.

Great performance last night at Kettle Run by both our varsity and JV grapplers.  We had a few notable "next man up" performances to fill in some roster holes and got points in every circumstance.  Coaches are very proud of the team's work in the practice room and it has translated onto the mat.

Highlights from NOVA Classic: Overall, Coach Fisher and I are extremely proud of the level of effort and performance from all of our wrestlers this weekend.  This tournament was a good check to see where we stood against high level competition from across the state. 

Congrats to Luis Parades after being out with a debilitating stomach bug to finishing 8^th at 165 and to Freshman phenom Angelo Chierico finishing 6^th at 144 (with a district/regional head-to-head win against Freedom SR).

Great work from all of our wrestlers who fought through Friday to get to Saturday: Dylan Divver (with a regional head-to-head win against Woodbridge), Dominic Hildreth, Angelo, Owen Clayborne, Liam Young, Luis, and William Tantau. 

On the bubble, Richard Miner records 2 pins and loses a 1-0 decision against a tough wrestler from Westfield, who wound up taking 4^th overall.

Payton Holmes notches a big, head-to-head win against Freedom in an exciting Sudden Victory gut check.

Both of our extra wrestlers, Cohen Rhee and Davin Chee demonstrated they are ready for varsity competition, notching team points and wins on Friday. 

The team is on a great trajectory for the season.  We start district competition next week with a home meet against Unity Reed (Dec 11). 

Thanks to all of our parents for your support, getting the team to FFX HS on Friday and enduring bleacher butt for both days.  It was a long weekend, but aside from the TrackWrestling hiccup on Saturday, thought that our hosts, Fairfax HS, ran a great tournament.

A bit of a look ahead, we will do wrestle-offs tonight to set the line up for our first varsity duals on Nov 29 and Coach Fisher and I are really looking forward to seeing the team in action.  I will have the Varsity and JV rosters posted to the team page by Saturday evening based off the wrestle-off results.  

Looking a bit deeper in the schedule, this will be the first season that we will have a JV competition during the holiday break.  On Dec 30, we are looking to send as full of a JV squad as possible to Woodbridge for their Battle at the Bridge tournament (JV edition).  The varsity will already be there, wrestling on Dec 29 and 30.  Take a look at your holiday plans, will be asking the team for an estimate on how many wrestlers will participate by Wednesday of next week.

As I mentioned in my last note, if you had plans for the holiday weekend that take you out of town for that Friday, do not change them.  Family obligations are important, just make sure your wrestler gets out and runs off that turkey or maybe pay a drop in fee at a local gym and get a workout in.

If you are only driving your wrestler, you do not need a permission form, if you add wrestlers from other families, their parents will need to sign off on the permission form

As we pause to give thanks and spend some well deserved time with families, just a reminder that we will be right in the thick of it when we return on Monday, Nov 27 with a JV Jamboree at Meridian HS. 

JV wrestlers- meet up in the hallway b/w the weight room and aux gym right after dismissal.  Make sure you have: 

1. Headgear

2. Wrestling Shoes

3. Mouthpiece (if you have braces)

4. Singlet (if you were not at last night's uniform issue, see me at this Weds or Friday practice)

5. Water bottle

Ensure that you trim your nails this weekend (I will have clippers onsite). 

Bus will depart at 3:00PM, weigh in at 5:00, wrestling from 6:00-9:00.  For parents, you wrestler will send you a text or call when we are about 10mins out returning to PHS for pick up in vicinity of door 19/20.  

For Varsity, no practice Monday, get a good run or workout in, see you Tuesday.  

Great start this weekend, to include the wrestle-offs last night. The varsity roster is set for the first dual meet on Nov 29 at Kettle Run.  

Thanks to all who came out today for the scrimmage at Brentsville and hats off to Coach Adams and his team for putting this on every year, great tune up to get our team ready to start competitions after Thanksgiving.  

Both the Varsity and JV rosters are posted on the team page under the Roster tab.  Wrestle-offs will continue throughout the season, so expect that these rosters will not be static and as I told the team, illness or injury could have a JV wrestler easily fleeting up to wrestle in a Varsity spot, so you always need to be ready and continue to grow/develop your skills as a wrestler.

No practice on Monday, Winter Sports Parent Meeting @ 7:15 in the Auditorium with a quick, individual sport breakout following.  Mr. Qualls will tell you where each sport will locate.  

Practice Tues-Fri, 6-8PM and Scrimmage at Brentsville District HS on Saturday, 9-11AM.

We will be headed over to Brentsville District HS for a scrimmage with teams from our host, Chantilly, Millbrook and Fauquier.  We will not take a team bus over, so wrestlers will need to be dropped off/picked up at the school to participate.  

Doors will open at 8:00AM, please arrive by 8:30AM so we can huddle and get a good warm-up in.  

Wrestling will start at 9:00 and go until 11:00, when wrestlers will be released to travel home.  Spectators are invited to attend.

Two highlights for the week, Winter Sports Meeting at 7:15 on Monday, Nov 13 in the Auditorium.  Will follow with a wrestling specific breakout.  On Saturday, Nov 18, we head to Brentsville District HS for a scrimmage:

Saturday- Scrimmage, 9-11AM, Brentsville District HS, 12109 Aden Road, Nokesville, VA 20181.  We will not take a bus.  Parents can drop off wrestlers by 8:30 to warm up, or, you can stay and watch.  It is like an enhanced practice, wrestlers will be called out by weight class and pair with wrestlers from other schools for exhibition matches, usually get 3-4 matches in before wrapping up.  BDHS will run concessions.  Pick up after 11:00.  

Please review prior to Monday's practice.  I will go over them before we start.  

The season is upon us.  Here is the plan for Tryout Week next Monday-Friday:

For each and every practice, clean gym clothes, headgear, mouthpieces (mandatory if you have braces), hand carry wrestling shoes and change in the room and water bottle.

For new wrestlers, we will issue you a singlet for competitions, but the warm up top (Classic Solid Pullover in Blue) is available for purchase and is customizable for a small additional fee.  

  As discussed in the interest meetings, part of the proceeds from sales comes back to the team as a fundraising activity.  Get your gear now to show your support for our Pioneer grapplers.  Intent is to have it in hand before the first varsity match at the end of November.

Great final off-season session last night.  Reminder that we will not have off-season workouts next week ahead of the opening week of the season on Nov 6-10.  

Tryouts/Practice start on Monday, Nov 6 at 6:00PM in the auxiliary gym and run until 8:00.  Same time and location through Friday and for the rest of the season.  

In order to participate, here are the forms/tasks to complete (blank forms for all available outside Mr. Qualls' office): 

1. White/yellow eligibility form filled out and turned in to Activities Office 

2. Blue Emergency card filled out and signed by parent- will be turned in to coaches if you do not already have one on file

3, Physical complete (dated after May 1) and turned in to trainer

4. Concussion training complete and turned in to the trainer

I will try to publish the schedule for hydration training/weight control program as soon as I finalize with Mr. McCullough.  It will begin during tryout week and go until all are enrolled.  Refer to the Varsity Team Files for tips to prepare for hydration testing.  

If you do not participate in a Fall sport that overlaps with wrestling, contact the coaches soonest if you have a conflict with tryout week.  If we do not have advanced warning of a conflict and you don't attend, you will likely not be allowed to join the team late.

Wrestling Season is right around the corner, coaches will host an interest meeting next week to lay out expectations, tryouts, answer questions and collect your information:

Workouts will be on Mondays and Thursdays.  Wednesdays did not have the facility availability we needed.  

We will start in the weight room at 6:00PM, transition into the main gym for open mat work from 7:00-8:00PM. 

Fall sport athletes, I will see you when you have been released by your coach at the end of your Fall season, not earlier.  

If you participate in FCA, Birds of Prey, VA Patriots or any other wrestling club that your parents pay for, that takes priority if there are time conflicts.  These off-season workouts are a chance to knock off some dust, get stronger, build some team cohesion and learn a little bit before going in to our season.  For new wrestling families, these are opportunities, not mandatory.  Coach Fisher and I do not evaluate wrestlers based off either their performance or attendance at these workouts.

CHANGE 1: NO OFF-SEASON WORKOUTS NEXT WEEK.  We were bumped from the Aux Gym by an in-season sport, so I need to relook what is available.  Still looking at Mondays and Wednesday b/w 6:00-8:00PM, but will more likely be a combo of weights and open mat work.  I will try to get a revised workout schedule out by the middle of next week.  

Keep working on getting an updated physical, complete concussion training and ensure you have a blue emergency contact card on hand or turned in to me before you report to either off-season workouts or the first week of tryouts in November.
