Plan for the Week, Jan 26-31:

Recap for the Week: Some really good wrestling against high caliber opponents beginning with our welcome of Independence HS to the Cedar Run District on Wednesday.  Our JV closed out the season in style at Gar-Field, and we took our district wrestlers that needed head to head matches for seeding to Battlefield HS on Friday to close out the regular season.  Some improved their standing by taking home victories and others made things a bit more interesting for this next Saturday. 

The women’s team is getting ready for their Zone qualifier for the state tournament, which will be held on Feb 4-5 at Gar-Field HS. 

Weather will obviously be determinative of what we get done this week. Monday is already off, the rest of the schedule assumes we are back in as early as Tuesday, but if we don’t have school, we don’t have practice. 

While the JV season is done, JV wrestlers are encouraged to show to help tune up our varsity wrestlers if you don’t have a spring sport or off-season for another sport.

Plan for the Week, Jan 19-23:

District Regular Season: Four more district level duals before we head into the post season and a last JV Jam for our team to close out a successful JV season.  We are excited to see our varsity wrestlers start to ramp up their performances to close the season strong and come in with some high seeds in the district tournament.   

Our women’s team had a great performance out at Mt Vernon on Saturday at the Major’s Magic Moments Mashup invitational (we all agreed that name was a little over the top).  Some really good wrestling heading into their postseason, which will start with a Zone qualifier in a couple of weeks.

Cardinal Duals recap: Congrats to the team on a gutty performance, finishing 2d overall in the 1^st Annual (since last year was snowed out) Cardinal Duals.  Lots of great wrestling across the lineup and Coach Fisher and I both achieved training heart rate and bit off whatever nails we have with the finish of the dual against Osbourn HS to put us in the championship match against Millbrook.  Great job by Gainesville HS in hosting.  Quick turn around and we will see Osbourn again this Wednesday night.

Plan for the Week, Jan 5-10:

Battle at the Bridge/Girls’ Bridge recap: What a way to ring in the New Year with the Battle at the Bridge at Woodbridge HS.  The level of competition (58 teams) was about the highest we have seen in the 5 years we have been attending and the coaches all saw very impressive wrestling from our team against talented competitors.  On the Men’s side, we had the following place winners:

Cohen Rhee, 7^th Place

Finn Owens, 8^th Place 

On the Women’s side, Katie Blankenship and Alicia Joya saw their first exposure to an official tournament. Katie and Ally both hammered their opponents in the first round with a tech fall (Katie) and pin (Ally) and then faced off against some tough competition in a 30-team field.

1. Arbiter registrations. The following individuals are registered, but pending approval of their physicals, recommend checking in with our athletic trainer, Mr. McCullough, to see if what you submitted needs correcting:

4. Weight Control Program enrollment. Will go concurrently with the first week of practice.  For those unfamiliar, see the handout for parents in files and the one for athletes on how to prepare. 

5. Save the Date. Parent Meeting will be held Nov 20 at 7PM in Commons 2.  We will go over VHSL guidance and policies and more specifics on the regular season.

1. Off-season workouts, last 2 this Monday and Wednesday of this week. Following week is a VHSL Dead Period for Winter sports.
    
2. Arbiter registrations, no changes from the last list. Get a hold of the trainer ASAP to find out what you need to correct on your physical to be approved.
    
3. Weight Control Program/Hydration testing. A guide from VHSL on the program and some tips on how to prepare (in separate post). We will do this the first 2 weeks of practice and again later for Fall sport athletes when they join the team. The intent of the program is to ensure that your student/athlete weighs in at an appropriate weight class during the season and doesn't lose a ridiculous amount of weight that could impact their growth and development.
    
4. Spartan Combat store for the tournament singlet still live through Nov 8. Expect to see a link for the Athletes Mark spirit wear store soon with all of the other high-demand items that our program receives a portion of as a fundraiser.

We were first in line at Spartan Combat, so they were able to open up our store earlier and it will close on Nov 8.  Focus was on the tournament singlet (we will issue a school purchased singlet to varsity and JV for competitions if you do not want to purchase one).  You can purchase and wear the other items in the store inventory, but they will also be available in our Athlete's Mark store, which is our annual fundraiser.
