Alex's Army - Sunday from 2-5 PM at Patriot High School

Patriot Track & Cross Country runners and family members:

Many of you may have heard of "Alex's Army," but perhaps you don't know the story behind the organization. Alex Green was an amazing young boy who lost his battle with cancer. He was the oldest of three children and his parents started Alex's Army to help raise awareness of childhood cancer and to fight for increased funding to find cures for the various types of cancers that children suffer with every year.

Alex loved sports. Even as cancer was taking away his ability to participate in sports or even just to walk, one thing Alex always made a point of was to do push-ups. It was one activity that he was able to continue, and he made certain to get his work in every day. Alex's parents want to honor their son's memory and bring greater awareness of childhood cancer, and you can help be a part of that!

If you are available, please join us as we attempt to make history by breaking the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the Most People Performing Pushups! This is a FREE community event taking place at Patriot High School track stadium. The event will take place this Sunday, June 10, 2018, from 2-5 PM at Patriot High School.

Gates will open at 1PM and the push up event will take place at 3PM**.

Trophies will be awarded to the High School, Middle School, Elementary School, or Sports Organization with the MOST participants.

We would love to see Patriot High School represented since it's on our home field!

Please pass along to anyone you know who is available. It will be fun, but most importantly, it is a chance to make a difference in the lives of some incredible people in our community.

Rules and Expectations, Meet Schedule, and Sign-outs

Good Evening Everyone,

  • Rules and Expectations - Please review the Rules and Expectations regarding missing practices, meets, and transportation expectations.
  • Meet Schedule - It is important that you review the Outdoor Track & Field meet schedule, and plan around your jobs, activities, clubs, other sports etc... If you have prior commitments on any of those dates, that you can't change, it is essential that you notify us (coaches) now.  When we are developing the meet entries we have a limited amount of time and are restricted to the number of entries we can make per event. In entering an athlete, and he/she notifies us within days of the meet, we are unable to fill that spot with another athlete, therefore taking an opportunity from another athlete to compete.
  • Transportation/sign-outs - Prince William County School has policies regarding riding the bus to and from meets.  These are in place for many reasons, and one being safety and knowing the whereabouts of our athlete while they are in our care. During certain weather conditions, I have the discretion of allowing students to go home with their parents, and all that is required is to have a coach sign them out to their parents. I would like to continue to have this option, therefore please ensure to sign-out your child when this courtesy has been given to you.

Running shoes (trainers) and spikes

Running shoes (trainers) and spikes

Several of you are already experiencing shin splints, which is is an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around your tibia. Most of the time this issue is resolved by having proper running shoes.  A specialty running store is able to do a gait analysis and recommend the proper training shoe for you.

Last Friday we discussed with the athletes the importance of having proper running shoes and spikes.  We recommend that they have the following:

  • Training running shoe (A specialty running store will be able to assist you in selecting the proper running shoe
  • Spikes - Athletes new to track and field we recommend a mid-distance spike.  All other sprint athletes need a sprint spike.  Long distance runners (3200, 1600, 800) need a mid-distance spike.

Having proper training/spike shoes by April 2, 2018, would be beneficial.

The Running Store (TRS) in Gainesville, but not limited to this store will be able to assist you.  In "Team Files" there is a coupon for buying trainers and spikes at the TRS.
