With 31 points by Drake Marshall, the Patriot Pioneers began the 2017-18 boys basketball season by beating Stonebridge, 72-62, at home in Nokesville.
Marshall made 9 of 17 field goals (53 percent) and 10 of 11 free throws (91 percent). He also had six rebounds and two assists.
After leading at the end of the first quarter, 15-12, the Pioneers fell behind by halftime, 32-27. But they went on a 24-15 run in the third period and finished on a 21-15 run in the fourth.
Jay Villani added 15 points, while Ike Onwuka had nine and Devon Parrish had seven. Miles Middleton had six rebounds and Parrish had four, as well as two assists.
